The aim of the Australian and New Zealand health workforce is to provide effective and safe quality care that improves the health and wellbeing of their respective communities. A number of concentrated efforts are being undertaken to look at workforce planning and development.
On 23 March 2011 the Senate referred the issue of AHPRA's performance to the Finance and Public Administration References Committee for Inquiry and Report. The College participated in the Inquiry by way of a written submission. The College's submission received specific mention in the report.
On Tuesday 23 November 2010, the House Standing Committee on Health and Ageing was directed to inquire into and report on Registration Processes and Support for Overseas Trained Doctors. The College participated in the Inquiry by way of a written submission and by appearing at the public hearing on 25 February 2011. The RACP made six recommendations to the Committee, four of which were adopted. This factsheet outlines the recommendations.
In 2008, The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) signed an intergovernmental agreement to establish a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme in Australia. The Scheme, which is implemented by AHPRA, aims to provide greater portability of the health professions, reduce red tape and provide a more responsive and sustainable workforce. AHPRA's operations are governed by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009, which came into effect on 1 July 2010.
The Medical Board of Australia, which also came into existence on 1 July 2010, is a national board supported by AHPRA. The Medical Board of Australia has issued a number of registration standards, codes and guidelines. During the period leading up to the creation of the Medical Board of Australia, the College made a number of submissions on various aspects of the reforms (only a selection of these are included on this page).
Health Workforce Australia is a Commonwealth statutory authority set up by COAG in order to provide a national, co-ordinated approach to workforce planning. It reports to the Australian Health Ministers’ Conference (AHMC), which comprises the health ministers in each state, territory, the Commonwealth and New Zealand. Health Workforce Australia is currently developing a National Training Plan to assist in achieving self-sufficiency in the supply of doctors, nurses and midwives by 2025.
Health Workforce New Zealand is responsible for planning and development of the health workforce, ensuring that staffing issues are aligned with planning on delivery of services and that the New Zealand healthcare workforce is fit for purpose.

College of Intensive Care Medicine New Zealand National Committee (CICM) - RACP Representative
Expressions of Interest are invited from Fellows to represent the RACP at three CICM face-to-face meetings each year. The role on the National Committee is that of an observer.
The National Committee advises the CICM Board of any matters in New Zealand that may concern the interests of that College, and advises the Board on matters affecting training, accreditation and review of hospital training programmes. The National Committee also engages with local jurisdictional issues and at its meetings discusses any relevant developments occurring in external agencies including the Ministry of Health, Medical Council of New Zealand, and Council of Medical Colleges.
